The thing you didn't know you needed - works great and sturdy!

I was a little uncertain as to whether or not I would actually use this aerator regularly, I have a few other "must have" tools that have ended up in a corner of the shed rarely being used. And at a retail of 50 bucks I was hesitant to add this to my collection of dust collectors. But I have been happily surprised by how useful and effective this aerator is. First of all, you need to attach the two sections together, but it's easy and once assembled it's quite sturdy, it's not going to fall apart while in use. The stainless steel is a good thickness and weight - it's very well made. You also have the option of attaching it to your drill for added power and ease - I haven't tried that yet but it's nice to have the option. Now for how it actually functions. I'm a pretty avid small-scale backyard composter, with several systems including tumblers, vermicompost bins and a couple of "static" piles. One is a box-style composter with an open bottom, where the worms assist the process mostly toward the bottom but the upper contents are s.l.o.w. to process without aeration; that's the one I use this tool in the most. This turner has made it pretty easy to aerate the contents, I just twist it into the pile in the composter, and lift/shake/twist etc. as I remove it from the box. And then I just hang the hook-shaped handle on the side of the bin where it's always handy and gets regularly used, since it's quality stainless steel I don't have to worry about damage from leaving it outside. I have noticed the contents are breaking down faster since I have been using this tool to mix and aerate the pile (as expected) and the key is that this tool is easy to use plus it's not buried in the shed - so I actually use it. Anyway the verdict is, if you have a compost pile, this will make your work of turning it a lot easier than other methods I know of (not including tumblers) and the quality construction and design make it worth the investment in my opinion.
